How to Educate the Diverse Employees You Hire

VAK Learning Style 

One way of classifying students is through the VAK learning style model. All modalities (Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic) are used when learning new content, but learners often have a preference for one or two of these modalities. For instance, someone may prefer to listen to someone read the content instead of reading it directly. Others may prefer to build something in the course to demonstrate their new knowledge. 

An effective approach to developing eLearning content is to encompass the senses that drive these modalities. Some of these remedies include: 

  • Animated videos to illustrate key concepts for visual learners 
  • Drag and drop modules to engage tactile learners 
  • Use dialogue in selling scenarios to educate auditory learners 

Personality Types 

Another way to consider learners is through their personality type. Personality types are often the accumulation of an individual’s traits that draw generalizations about the person. While the concreteness of personality types is a debated topic, we can use the information drawn from these individuals’ preferences to implement engaging content in eLearning courses. 

For instance, most personality types distinguish introverts from extroverts. Most organizations will likely have a considerable number of both types of personalities. Just like with the VAK model, using modules that encourage both these personality types will leave a lasting impression on many different learners and result in better knowledge retention. 

As an example, introverts could more comfortably answer knowledge-based questions that already have the answers to choose from (i.e. multiple choice, true or false). Extroverts could prefer to explain key concepts and talk them out with supervisors. Incorporating both into one course pushes learners past their comfort zones to try new things. It also almost guarantees that everyone will be able to express their new knowledge in an effective way for them. 

Having an assortment of integrations in your course that cater to the different learners in your organization can ensure everyone gets something out of the module. Include versatile implementations such as:  

  • Challenges for self-driven individuals
  • Stories for adventure-seekers 
  • Actionable course objectives for goal-oriented learners 
  • Test questions for those who like validation through numbers 
  • Gamified content for problem solvers who like action 

The implementation of diversity in eLearning not only adds interest and engagement, but also appeals to a broad group of prospective employees.
