The Power of Creativity in eLearning

Creativity is a catalyst to a successful eLearning experience. As learners, we are more inclined to engage and interact with platforms that help us tap into our creative processes. When Instructional Designers develop immersive content that sparks our curiosity and helps us establish an emotional connection, it enhances our ability to retain knowledge and incorporate it into our professional and personal lives.

Two ways that Instructional Designers stimulate our creativity during the learning process is by:

  1. Integrating storytelling and real-world examples into their content
  2. Designing interactive scenarios and simulations to keep us actively involved

Storytelling and Real-World Examples

Naturally, learners are drawn to and inspired by captivating storylines and relatable examples that we can emotionally connect with and apply to our real-life experiences. Content writers utilize this knowledge to generate concepts and ideas that pique our interest and prompt our imagination. When we can fully engross ourselves in the topics being explored through compelling stories and real-world examples, we are able to make comparisons between the subject matter and our personal lives. These comparisons help us to better our understanding and transform our knowledge into more tangible skills that will benefit us in the long run.

Scenarios and Simulations

Similarly, scenarios and simulations encourage learners to interact with content through engaging challenges and ideas that test our understanding. In turn, they motivate us to think more creatively while navigating familiar topics that relate to our personal experiences. Well-designed scenarios (e.g., customer interactions) allow us to interact with familiar content to make decisions based on our previously gained knowledge. At the same time, they assess the consequences so that we become a part of the learning process and not just passive observers. These components activate our emotional commitment to the material, leading to greater knowledge retention.

Putting It All into Perspective

Ultimately, as learners, we are more likely to enjoy our eLearning experiences when they awaken our creativity to establish an emotional connection between ourselves and the material. Through storytelling that is captivating and relatable, real world experiences that evoke strong feelings, scenarios, and simulations that make us active participants in the learning process, we can freely exercise our imagination to apply these lessons in the real-world.
