Designing More Inspiring eLearning Courses

The most memorable eLearning courses and training are those that are strategically designed to be more inspiring and interactive. When learners feel empowered to tackle their learning goals, they can unlock new experiences and opportunities which will drive them to strengthen their overall work performance. This determination to succeed within their role will benefit everyone – their employers, who will have confidence in knowing that their employees are knowledgeable and well-prepared, and the customers with whom they interact regularly. 

There are several ways that course developers and content writers can design an eLearning course that generates momentum among learners. These include effective research during the planning stage, activities and scenarios that promote active learning, components that are motivating and collaborative, personalization, and empathy.  

Effective Research

Instructional Designers (IDs) are largely responsible for creating content that is appropriate for the audience they are targeting. Effective research during the planning stage goes a long way and will determine if learners will want to engage with the material they are taking. By navigating different sources during the planning phase, IDs can develop a better understanding of who the audience is, what will capture and retain their attention, and the learning expectations and goals that they have when they pursue a course. 

Active Learning

It is important for course developers to understand the difference between passive and active learning. With passive learning, learners are often presented with material and expected to internalize it. This learning method carries the risk of be boring and redundant, and significant outcomes can be limited. However, active learning forces learners to become more alert as they need to engage with the topic. By implementing real-world scenarios and simulations, Instructional Designers and developers can inspire learners to facilitate positive changes within the real world – or, in this case, while on the job. 

Motivation and Collaboration

eLearning courses that are designed with a variety of different applications and dynamic assignments enhance learners’ motivation as they are constantly interacting with new material to keep them productive and immersed. Plus, collaborative components like group forums and discussions raise cooperation and stimulate learners to think more critically and share their thoughts with others. These factors encourage them to work on common goals and to take others’ perspectives into consideration, which improves their ability to evaluate critically. Surely, this is one of the most useful skills to master within the workforce. 


A simple way to gauge learners’ attention and boost their willingness to do well in a course is to personify their learning experience. Allowing them to type their name and choose or personalize an avatar that is unique to them will make them feel more connected to the training. When learners feel acknowledged, they are more likely to focus and dedicate themselves to the material. 


While designing an eLearning course, it is crucial to be empathetic towards the audience’s needs – by tuning into how the learner will experience the content, developers and IDs can create a course that is deeply rewarding. Some ways to empathize with the learner are by allowing open and unrestricted navigation which allows them to access sections of the material that interest them, and by providing instructions that are clear and concise.

Similarly, IDs and developers are constantly searching for new methods to design and deliver eLearning courses that propel learners forward. By conducting effective research, promoting active learning, encouraging motivation and collaboration, personifying learning experiences, and understanding how empathy plays a significant role in LMS designs, brands can deliver content that captivates learners and mobilizes them to master their work performance.
