The Mobile Learning Revolution is here it is knocking at your company’s door. This revolution is not just staying for dinner, it’s moving in and taking over.
Why is it so important for you to let the Mobile Learning Revolution get cozy within your company’s walls? Isn’t this something that just appeals to the youth? Well, here is the scoop, if you haven’t adopted mobile applications for training and eLearning, you are not reaching the largest generation in the U.S. labour force – millennials.
Millennials love their mobile devices, and they love to learn, it’s a known fact. You’re probably asking yourself ‘why take training on a small smartphone screen when they can take it on a desktop?’ It’s an easy answer, mobile gives employees the power to train whenever and wherever. And that is something that’s very cool and important to millennials.
So, the age old saying, ‘good things come in small packages,’ could never be truer. With this trend towards taking training on phones & tablets rather than desktops means the adoption of a ‘mobile-first’ approach to training development to fit this Mobile Learning Revolution. We are now seeing bite-sized, straight-to-the-point, mobile-friendly training taking the eLearning world by storm, and these bite-sized packages of training are producing great results.
Mobile Learning Revolution and Informal Learning
One of the most amazing things about mobile eLearning is that employees can access training on demand. In the past when employees took training, they had to bank the knowledge for future use, and by the time they needed to interact with a customer or use that information, they would have forgotten most of what they learned. With mobile learning, employees can engage when they need the information most, like when answering a customer’s question or when curious about a certain subject matter. This promotes this whole notion of Pervasive Learning (learning at the speed of need through formal, informal and social learning modalities)* or informal learning (stay tuned, we will open your mind to this topic at a later date.) So, because phones allow a person to learn wherever and whenever, and usually the training being accessed is when an employee needs the information most, the Mobile Learning Revolution and pervasive or informal learning are a perfect match made in heaven. A lot of the time, when the employee researches a training topic on a mobile device, they are applying that knowledge to a real-life scenario, which further drives the lesson home. This improves retention. At the same time, companies that build social communities on which employees can engage with their peers via their mobile device fosters further informal learning because here you have hundreds of employees discussing one common denominator – work.
You may think that there is no need for informal learning in the workplace but keep in mind: 32% of employees say that 80%-100% of what they know came from informal learning and on 6% of what they know has come from formal.** Mobile learning is the perfect accompaniment to this learning style.
When a company opens its doors to the Mobile Learning Revolution all sorts of positive things happen. If you take away anything from this blog, remember: long, boring eLearnings delivered on big, clunky, outdated desktops are becoming a thing of the past, and that good things come in small packages- like small bite-sized eLearnings on a sleek, pocket-sized smartphone.
